I feel like I should start this review by saying that The Memory of Animals may not be suitable for everyone – especially for those who might be hesitant about delving into a narrative centered around a pandemic, contagion, or deadly illness, given our recent collective experiences.
Furthermore, I want to assure readers that this book doesn’t overwhelmingly dwell on the somber aspects related to animals. I’ll admit I had reservations before delving into The Memory of Animals, fearing a significant focus on animal fatalities. Thankfully, such concerns are unfounded. Most of the animals in this book play a central role through Neffy’s recollections.
All that said, The Memory of Animals is one of those books that makes you stop and think. It’ll make you think about a lot of things, but mostly about life, memories, and what we hold dear. While the rest of the world grapples with memory loss and dire circumstances, Neffy is confined indoors with ample time on her hands. Consequently, she delves deeper into her memories, taking the readers on a thought-provoking journey. The deliberate contrast between her internal explorations and the external world’s turmoil is genuinely intriguing.
